Homework Help - In Unit 1 you will see homework that asks children to show their work. If your child is able to solve the problems mentally then the work would simply be the number equation. If your child uses a counting strategy to get the answer, the work may be to write the larger number and then draw a small circle for each number counted on.
Example: Sean say 9 birds in the sky. Then he saw 4 more. How many birds did Sean see altogether?
solve mentally: 9 + 4 = 13 counting strategy: 9 °°°° , 10, 11, 12, 13

For comparison or subtraction problems the same would apply with counting back. But your child could also draw a matching picture which shows the smaller number matched one to one to the larger one. The ones not matched are the difference.

Count using finger flashes. Have your child show the correct number of fingers for each number. For the teen numbers they should flash ten fingers to the left and the extra ones to the right as they say: Eleven is ten and one. Twelve is ten and two. For decade numbers they will flash groups of ten: Twenty is ten and ten.

Practice the Make a Ten strategy for solving addition problems up to 20. Use counters and a ten-frame to make a ten. For example, to find the total of 8 and 5, children place 8 red counters in the ten frame and 5 yellow counters outside the ten frame. Then have your child move yellow counters into the ten frame to make a 10. The total is 10 plus the counters outside the ten frame.
